Christie's Auction
Zippy, Bungle and George costumes were amongst items from Thames TV's Rainbow which featured in the third annual TV Generation sale at South Kensington held on Thursday 12 July 2001.
The trio came complete with their own luggage and wardrobe, including a turquoise and silver tutu for Bungle, a deerstalker and cape, a fake ermine trimmed red velvet cape and snakeskin superhero costume and mask for George and Zippy. Also included in the lot was a group of publicity photographs from the show. This slice of childhood nostalgia was estimated to fetch up to £3,000 at auction.
Bidding opened at £2000, and rapidly reached the final offer of £6500. The successful buyers, accompanied by Geoffrey and Jane Tucker adjourned for a press conference following a round of applause.
The new owners of Zippy, George and Bungle were revealed to be Pearson Television, the owners of the classic children's programme. Fran Bromley, Pearson TV's Creative Development Manager, said that Pearson "want to make them accessible to people" indicating that, with any luck, they would be put on display for all to see. Fran boosted the hopes of Rainbow fans by not ruling out a return for the show.
